How to Choose Which Grain Feed Out Carts to Buy

Updated: May 10, 2021

If you are in the market for a grain feed out cart, you might be wondering how to choose the best feed out cart for your needs. When choosing between feed out carts, it can be good to have a think about your requirements.

In this blog post, we address some of the questions you can ask yourself to work out which grain feed out carts work best for you. Read on to find out more!

Number of animals you plan on feeding

One of the most important details to work out before making your purchase is the number of animals you plan on feeding with your bale feeder. If you have a smaller farm with fewer animals, then a smaller feeder may suffice. To figure out the hay and silage capacity you will need, work out how many hay bales you require, and how often you feed your animals. If you wish to learn more, or would like a little assistance in choosing between grain feed out carts, get in touch with our friendly team today!

Round or square hay bales

Another factor to consider when choosing your feed out cart is whether you will be using round or square hay bales. At Willie’s Manufacturing Industries, we manufacture and sell both round bale feeders, and those that can carry both round and square bales of hay. For example, we manufacture the Elite feeder, which can carry up to two round bales of hay, but we also manufacture the Albybone bale feeder, which can carry either 6 square or 5 round bales. While square bales are more traditional, modern technology means that round bales are also available.

Size and weight of machine

When looking at grain feed out carts to purchase, consider the machinery you will be using to transport the cart to your desired location. To make things easier, we list the weights (plus the dimensions) of all of our feeders on our website. This means you can work out which products can be transported by your machinery, and make an informed decision about your purchase, accordingly.

What you should pay attention to

Below, we have outlined a couple of elements we think you should consider if you are in the market for a bale feeder.

Quality workmanship

Having a feed out cart that is made using quality materials and workmanship is a god place to start. A quality machine should provide reliability for many years. In fact, WMI’s first machine is still going strong after 17 years! We understand the importance of building machinery that can withstand the harsh Australian climate, and create products that have a simple design with quality welding. We love hearing from customers, and welcome customer feedback and constructive criticism. We seek to improve our designs wherever possible, as well as listening to this feedback when designing new machines.

Features you require

Feed out carts can have many different features, allowing you to choose machinery that suits your needs. On our website, we list many of the features of each of our bale feeders so that you can find one that works for you. For example, the Albybone features a curved chamber for pad feeding, an independent tandem rocker system, and can be used for carting in. The Elite has rippers that travel over the top of the chassis to reduce component damage, a versatile loading system with collapsible forks for safety, and a simple chain adjustment. To find out more about the features that our feeders have, check out our Products page! You can also give us a call or send us an email to find out more about our products’ features.

Built-to-order options

After something a little different to the four models we have available? WMI can also provide a range of built-to-order machinery, designed to fit your sizing and load requirements. We can build smaller versions of our Champion model, or larger versions of our Albybone design. We aim to work with our customers to create a custom-made product that meets their needs. Get in touch with our team to discuss order options for customised machinery.

When choosing a bale feeder to purchase, it can be beneficial to work out exactly the type of product you require, including sizing, weight, number of animals you are looking to feed, and various other features, before proceeding. You can also make a request for a custom-made product, if you cannot find what you are looking for from the standard machinery options.
